Starstruck by Brenda Hiatt| Book Review

********************                                                                                                                  Nerdy astronomy geek Marsha, M to her few friends, has never been anybody special. Orphaned as an infant and reluctantly raised by an overly-strict “aunt,” she’s not even sure who she is. M’s dream of someday escaping tiny Jewel, Indiana and making her mark in the world seems impossibly distant until hot new quarterback Rigel inexplicably befriends her. As Rigel turns his back on fawning cheerleaders to spend time with M, strange things start to happen: her acne clears up, her eyesight improves to the point she can ditch her thick glasses, and when they touch, sparks fly—literally! When M digs for a reason, she discovers deep secrets that will change her formerly humdrum life forever . . . and expose her to perils she never dreamed of. Yes, the middle of nowhere just got a lot more interesting! (as seen on Goodreads)

What I think

Marsha’s life was never easy but when new boy Rigel starts school and takes an interest in her unexplained things start to happen and Marsha starts to ask questions, the thing is does she really want to know the answers?

This book is a lovely little read. It’s easy to get through and had a good plotline to follow. Quite predictable at times, a bit cliché and a little teenage angsty but let’s be honest high school brings that out in everyone. I knew I would enjoy this book before reading it but I didn’t realize just how much. Hiatt’s book transcends the usual high school romance into something much more enjoyable to read which allows readers to really relate to the characters and feel like they are part of the story.

I particularly enjoyed the Paranormal aspect to the book- it made the high school drama that little bit more interesting and added to the plot as a whole.

Overall, I would say that this book is for those in their teens or new to YA. Also,  I recommended this book to a few friends long before I actually finished reading which tells you all how much I enjoyed this! I definitely will try to read some more of this best-selling authors books in the future, have any of you read any of them?

  1. Starstruck is the first in a wonderful four book series. Look for its sequels Starcrossed, Starbound and Starfall. Marsha’s story eventually gets far away from Jewel, Indiana. Very far away.
