If I Stay by Gayle Forman Book Review

If I Stay by Gayle Forman – Amazon       Goodreads

Choices. Seventeen-year-old Mia is faced with some tough ones: Stay true to her first love—music—even if it means losing her boyfriend and leaving her family and friends behind?

Then one February morning Mia goes for a drive with her family, and in an instant, everything changes. Suddenly, all the choices are gone, except one. And it’s the only one that matters.
If I Stay is a heartachingly beautiful book about the power of love, the true meaning of family, and the choices we all make. (as seen on Goodreads)

“sometimes you make choices in life and sometimes choices make you”

Unlike many other people I had never heard of If I Stay before I saw the trailer for the movie. When I saw the trailer I was in tears and decided then and there that any movie that can make me cry is definetly worth a read. Wow. I will admit it is not my favourite book and I didn’t cry anywhere near as much as I thought I would but this one hit me in the feels.

“I realize now that dyeing is easy. Living is hard”

The main character Mia has an outer body experience when she is put in a coma of sorts after being in a car crash with her family. We read about how she has to make a choice of whether to wake up or move on while she watches everything that is happening around her in the hospital.

“Love can make you immortal”

As well as reading about the present dilemma that Mia is facing we also see the flashbacks of how Mia met Adam the love of her life and their life together. I love these two together! They are the perfect couple and know each other so well. The flashbacks tie this book together I think and really make you feel for Mia, she is a very lovable character.

“If I stay. If I live. It’s up to me.”

I read this book in one afternoon and I have to say my favourite part of this book was the characters. Every character in it is spectacularly written, so much so that it is very easy to see them as real people that you would see up the street. My favourite character in this book was Mia’s grandfather a selfless loving grandfather who was the one to finally make me sob when he said “It’s okay if you have to leave us. It’s okay if you want to stop fighting””

Overall, a great book to read that is inspiring and thought provoking as well as funny and tearful. I look forward to reading the next book in the series and to watch the movie as well.
